Organic Sicilian wine, in a can

Last week we were lucky enough to be sent some exquisite Sicilian wine. We tasted a white wine made from the island’s indigenous Catarratto grape, and some rosé made from Syrah, one of our favourite red grapes. Both wines were organic, crisp and wonderfully balanced, and they just so happened to come in a can.

We want to share a HUGE thank you to Vinca Wine for this delicious gift, and to opening our eyes to something new.

Canned wine? Yes indeed. There are some fantastic environmental reasons to choose canned wine (see below), and when it tastes this good there’s no compromise. It’s a great choice for picnics, and a really brilliant option when opening a full bottle feels unnecessary (hello portion control).

5 facts on Vinca:

  1. The Syrah rosé is full of soft red fruits and has refreshing acidity; there are delicate notes of pomegranate and rose petal. The Catarratto white is a medium-bodied white wine packed with ripe yellow fruits, lots of citrus and blossom.

  2. Vinca cans are made from 73% recycled content and of course 100% recyclable.

  3. They offset the carbon footprint of all deliveries by planting trees.

  4. The gorgeous labels are printed on recycled paper made from grape skins. We love this fact.

  5. Glass bottles are heavy to ship from A to B, and they require lots of extra space or padding when packed. Their clunky and fragile nature means more fuel required for distribution. Canned wine uses just a fraction of the weight and space and therefore has a smaller carbon footprint.

3 pairings for Vinca Sicilian Wine:

scetta

Creamy goats cheese & caramelised red onion bruschetta

Find the recipe here. The bright acidity of the Catarratto grape zips through the creamy goats’ cheese and sweet onions beautifully, and it’s mid-weight body is a good match for the creamy mouthfeel of this delightful vegcentric bruschetta.

Joey and Katy cauli carbonara with preserved lemon

Cauli carbonara with roquefort, chilli & preserved lime

Find the recipe here. This recipe sounds mental, of that we’re well aware. But a) it’s wild, unique and utterly delicious, and b) its flavour match with the Vinca white wine is remarkable - both are citrusy, perfumed and saline, with strong notes of preserved lemon and a creamy luxurious mouthfeel. Top pairing.

Crushed raspberry & goats' cheese bruscetta

Crushed raspberry, sweet chilli & goats’ cheese bruschetta.

Find the recipe here. Okay so another twist on ‘goats’ cheese on toast’ this time laced with a wild and wonderful “sweet/sour” dynamic from the sweet chilli dressing, and lots of juicy red fruit flavours from the raspberries. The flavours in this dish echo those of the Vinca rosé very well indeed.
